Mifabon Tablet is a synthetic steroid used for the termination of an early pregnancy. It is also used for the management of high blood sugar levels in people with people with high level of cortisol for a prolonged duration (Cushing’s syndrome). A medical termination pack or Mifabon Tablet consists of two medicines Mifepristone and Misoprostol that are used to medically terminate the pregnancy. The kit contains 5 tablets. One tablet of Mifepristone and four tablets of Misoprostol. It is medically prescribed if you are within 63 days of gestation. Doctors do not opt for this process if you are over 10 weeks pregnant. Mifepristone is a synthetic steroid taken orally with water. It interferes with the Progesterone Secretion that terminates the Pregnancy. Misoprostol is a Synthetic Prostaglandin that causes the cervix to soften, contract the Uterus and allows the emptying of the uterine contents. It is administered vaginally or orally depending on the patient’s condition. Misoprostol may be self-administered or administered under a gynaecologist’s supervision so that the patient has access to the health facilities, if necessary. In case of an intrauterine pregnancy, termination by surgery is recommended. The dosage is 1 tablet of Mifepristone, followed by 4 tablets of Misoprostol after 1-3 days. If abortion fails to occur after the administration of Misoprostol, the second dose of Misoprostol (2 tablets) is administered. In case of an intrauterine pregnancy, termination by surgery is recommended. This medicine is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream upon oral administration and reaches the peak levels within 1-2 hours. How long do the effects of this medicine last? The effect of this medicine lasts for an average duration of 7-10 days. Is it safe to consume alcohol while taking this medicine? Interaction with alcohol is unknown. It is advisable to consult your doctor before consumption. Is this a habit forming medicine? No habit forming tendencies were reported. Can this medicine be taken during pregnancy? The use of this medicine is acceptable for medical termination of intrauterine pregnancy which is 63-70 days old. However, use of this medicine for control of elevated blood sugar levels along with elevated cortisol level is not recommended for pregnant women. It should be noted that a failed attempt to terminate pregnancy might result in severe complications. Can this medicine be taken while breast-feeding? The use of this medicine should be avoided by women who are breastfeeding. However, if it becomes necessary to use this medicine then breastfeeding should be discontinued.
